Licensing in Texas
Texas does not license chimney or home-improvement contractors at the state level. Local registration may apply — No state GC license, so cities govern. San Antonio requires mechanical contractors to register their TDLR license plus a background check; Houston requires permits via the Houston Permitting Center; Dallas may require annual registration — verify on each city site.
Texas has no state license for chimney sweeps or general contractors — anyone can advertise chimney service without state credentials. Only gas/HVAC work needs a TDLR license. Verify private CSIA/NFI certification and check for city registration or permits.
Source: TDLR — Apply for an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor License. Checked Jul 13, 2026.
